Dear Students and Families,
Welcome to Language Arts! I am excited about the opportunity to work with you, and I am looking forward to a happy and productive school year.
At Seneca Middle School, Language Arts is a 43-minute class everyday. In this class, I will be using a workshop approach in both reading and writing to allow students the opportunity for maximum growth based on their individual interests and literacy needs. The workshop approach includes small group instruction, whole class instruction, and student-directed independent reading and writing.
My primary goal is to promote student achievement through a supportive, positive and nurturing learning environment.
Homework- Students will have English homework. Each week, unless specified, students will be responsible for reading at home and responding to comprehension questions on a double-sided reading log. Homework is also based on classroom discussion and assignments. There is no predetermined list of homework assignments so please be sure to write down homework assignments, and parents, please be sure to check your student’s daily planner for assignments and due dates. Homework is always written on the chalkboard in advance. It is always a good idea to exchange phone numbers with a classmate in case you are absent- you are responsible for all assignments regardless of your attendance. Also, you can access student assignments at www.whatsupinela.weebly.com
Grades
Grades are a direct reflection of both student progress and student effort. Homework, class work and assessments will count toward a final grade using the school’s grading scale. There will be no extra credit assignments so it is vitally important to stay on top of your work.
Discipline
Behavior is an important component in student learning. Disrespectful and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Students who violate classroom rules knowingly accept the consequences.
The following is a list of classroom rules for the upcoming year. The first and most important rule is that students must show respect toward themselves and everybody around them at all times. Students must abide by the following four P rules:
Materials
The following materials need to be in class by Tuesday the 8th and cannot be used for any other class so do not use a multi subject notebook or binder for more than one class. Students will often be asked to leave their notebooks/binders in the classroom and may not be able to access his or her materials to bring to other classes. Please label the following with first and last name, my name, English, and the appropriate class period.
Studies show that parent involvement is a key factor in student success. I welcome you to contact me anytime you have a question or concern. The best means of communication is email.

Once again, welcome to Language Arts. I know that each and every student has tremendous potential and my goal is to help all students recognize their own abilities. I would like to thank you in advance for your support and dedication to your student’s success in Language Arts.
