Due Thursday, 9/29- a fiction or nonfiction book for independent reading- if you are using a Kindle, please just have the author and title to share with me! Magazines, graphic novels, etc. are acceptable.
Due Wednesday, 10/5- Reading Log (Students must read 3.5 hours per week and parents must sign in acknowledgement of this time. Please sign for each and everyday and make sure that the two questions on the back of the log are answered. Reading logs are weekly assignments.)

During the month of May, we will be reading and discussing science fiction; we will read "Dark They were and Golden Eyed," by Ray Bradbury, and ""the Monsters are Due on Maple Street," by Rod Serling.
Students are expected to study word parts in preparation for the final exam- they will be quizzed on these words. If you need the list, click on the following link:

Grammar Test on Tuesday, April 5 on pages 396 and 398 of the grammar packet distributed in class. Any student taking the ELA will not have to take the test until the following week!
Currently, students are reading a novel entitled The Cay, by Theodore Taylor. Students must annotate every chapter of the novel- annotations will be graded.

Students are required to write a multi-paragraph essay that explains how Charles Dickens informs the reader about the living conditions of life during the Victorian Era in A Christmas Carol. The following graphic organizers are required and will aid the writing process.

FICTION TERMS STUDY GUIDE
As we have finished reading and watching a dramatic adaptation of "A Christmas Carol," students are asked to reflect on the background information that we have discussed in class- i.e.- Poor Law of 1834 in England, and workhouses of industrialized London, conflicts of the rich and poor. In the upcoming week we will be looking at how terribly the wealthy treated the poor and how Dickens exposed this harsh reality through his story, specifically the character Scrooge.

Students will also be reading the play in class and upon returning from the vacation, students will write about the poor houses of England during the mid nineteenth century.
